The People Power Party announced on the 29th that it would form the 'SK Telecom Consumer Rights and Personal Information Protection Task Force' to investigate and prepare measures related to the 'SK Telecom subscriber USIM information leak' incident.
Kim Sang-hoon, the policy chief, said at the morning meeting of the National Assembly that the 'SK Telecom USIM information leak incident is a serious data security incident beyond simple personal information leakage' and noted, 'We plan to establish the SK Telecom Consumer Rights Protection Task Force to support the protection of the people's rights and the swift resolution of the incident.'
The task force is expected to consist of commissioners from the National Assembly's Political Affairs Committee and the Administrative Safety Committee. The chairperson of the task force will be Representative Kim Hee-jung from the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA). The task force will hold an urgent meeting as soon as possible to examine the cause of the incident, the damage situation, the response, and to prepare specific measures to prevent recurrence.
Chairperson Kim also questioned SK Telecom's delayed response.
He said, 'SK Telecom officially announced the USIM hacking incident and provided free USIM protection services, free USIM replacements, and offered 100% compensation for illegal duplication and damages,' adding, 'Nevertheless, due to the lack of USIM chip inventory, concerns over secondary damage, and the receipt of personal information leakage reports, the public's anxiety continues to spread.'
He emphasized, 'This incident cannot be taken lightly,' and stated, 'We must clearly hold accountable for incidents caused by corporations not fulfilling their information protection duties and use this as an opportunity to establish practical countermeasures.'
Chairperson Kim said, 'Especially, the fact that SK Telecom, a key player in the domestic telecommunications market, has failed to maintain even basic information protection is a very serious issue,' and added, 'The delayed response after the hacking and insufficient control have exacerbated customer anxiety, and there was no prompt and transparent information disclosure.'
Earlier, SK Telecom was attacked on the 18th, with an estimated 9.7GB of data corresponding to 9,000 copies of a 300-page book being stolen. Despite ten days passing since the incident occurred, the exact leakage route, cause, and scale of damage have yet to be revealed.
The People Power Party also formed a special policy committee for ICT broadcasting media on the same day. The committee appointed Representative Kim Jang-gyeom, a former CEO of MBC, as chairperson. The committee is composed of 25 members across five subcommittees to discuss issues such as restoring media public interest, responding to fake news, reforming broadcast structure, innovating the ICT media industry, and strengthening platform responsibilities.
