In the primary to select the next presidential candidate of the People Power Party, candidates Kim Moon-soo and Han Dong-hoon advanced to the final round, while candidates Ahn Cheol-soo and Hong Joon-pyo were eliminated.
The People Power Party's election management committee chairman, Hwang Woo-yeo, announced the results of the "second primary" on the afternoon of the 29th.
The People Power Party narrowed down four candidates from the second primary to two final candidates through a process that combined 50% votes from party members and 50% from public opinion surveys conducted over two days from the 27th to 28th.
The voter turnout rate among party members reached 50.93% (394,000 out of a total of 765,773), with mobile voting participation at 42.13% and ARS (automated response system) voting at 8.80%.
The public opinion survey was conducted by five polling agencies targeting a total of 6,000 supporters and undecided voters of the People Power Party, with 1,200 respondents each (average aggregation).
In particular, as no candidate received a majority of votes that day, the People Power Party had to hold a final round to determine the "last remaining candidate" between the two.
The People Power Party will hold a debate on the 30th and conduct party member voting (50%) and public opinion surveys (50%) over two days on the 1st and 2nd of next month to select the final candidate at the 5.3 National Convention.
As a result of deciding on Kim and Han as the final two candidates, the final round has made the divide between the "anti-impeachment faction" and the "pro-impeachment faction" clearer than during the first and second rounds.
During the primary debate, candidate Kim noted, "The president should have taken advice to properly manage state affairs and prevent a martial law," as he pointed to the accountability of candidate Han, who had served as party leader.
In contrast, candidate Han emphasized the need for change and renewal in the party, saying, "To win, we must cross the sea of martial law."
Meanwhile, Ahn Cheol-soo, who was eliminated that day, stated, "Our country is currently in a crisis," and added, "For the People Power Party to overcome the crisis, we must work harder. Whoever becomes the candidate, I will devote my efforts to prevent Lee Jae-myung from seizing power. Our party's victory will be the victory of the people and a victory in history."
Candidate Hong Joon-pyo expressed his gratitude, saying, "Thanks to your support over the past 30 years, I am now graduating from my political life today. I will return to being a citizen. My role in this presidential election ends here."
