Han Duck-soo, the acting Prime Minister, urgently instructed on the 27th regarding the SK Telecom (SKT) SIM card (USIM) hacking incident, saying, "The Ministry of Science and ICT must closely examine the appropriateness of the measures taken by the service provider to ensure that the public's inconveniences and anxieties can be resolved as soon as possible."
Acting Prime Minister Han noted, "The Ministry of Science and ICT should closely examine the appropriateness of SKT's follow-up measures, such as subscribing to SIM protection services and replacing SIM cards, while I urge relevant ministries, including the Korea Communications Commission and the Personal Information Commission, to do their utmost to resolve public inconveniences as soon as possible."
He emphasized, "In addition, please thoroughly analyze the causes of the incident currently under investigation, transparently inform the public, and ensure that relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Science and ICT, the National Intelligence Service, and the Cyber Security Agency, diligently review and improve the current information protection system to prepare for the increasing cyber attacks."
Earlier, SKT announced on the 22nd that a SIM information leak incident had occurred due to malicious code. Currently, the Ministry of Science and ICT is investigating the cause and scale of the incident with a public-private joint investigation team. The full investigation into the extent of the damage, specifics of the leaked information, perpetrators, and hacking methods is expected to take about two months.
