A debate arose over a post on the website of the alumni association of Seoul Chungam High School, the alma mater of former President Yoon Suk-yeol.
On the 18th, a post titled "Son of Chungam" former President Yoon Suk-yeol (class of 8) appeared on the website of the Chungam High School alumni association. The post was published under the name of the chief administrator on the 15th.
The chief administrator wrote, "Yoon Suk-yeol, an alumnus, served as the 20th President of the Republic of Korea, representing the country in public office for nearly three years from 2022. On April 4, 2025, he stepped down from the presidency in accordance with the Constitutional Court's impeachment ruling, and he has since returned to civilian life."
The chief administrator also noted, "The evaluation of alumnus Yoon Suk-yeol will be a matter for history to judge in the future, but we remember the journey of a Chungam person who held a heavy responsibility more than anyone else. Whether that path was smooth or rocky, and regardless of what one may think of him, he is undoubtedly a son of Chungam, and his name will remain in the history of the school."
The chief administrator added, "Even at this moment, junior students of Chungam are nurturing their dreams on campus, becoming the standard for new leadership and responsible actors who will lead society." He continued, "Do not lose courage; each one of you will become the leadership that leads the future of the Republic of Korea."
However, seemingly aware of the political controversy, the chief administrator added, "This post contains evaluations of specific political stances or the Constitutional Court's judgment." The chief administrator stated, "This was written to record the public office history of the alumnus and as a matter of respect, and the alumni association will respect political neutrality and adhere to community consensus processes when creating major posts in the future."
The post received over 100 comments, most of which expressed disagreement with its intent. Comments included remarks such as, "Is being dismissed something to be proud of?" "Stand up for what you believe in." "Aren't you ashamed?"
As the backlash from alumni intensified, the Chungam High School alumni association decided to hold an emergency executive committee meeting on the 21st to consider making the post private.
The chief administrator acknowledged through comments that "the posting of alumni association content that included respectful expressions regarding matters of significant public outrage, such as conspiracy to commit insurrection and the controversy over illegal martial law, cannot escape criticism for having ultimately harmed the spirit and values of the Chungam community," and stated, "In the future, major posts will be carefully written through community consensus processes."
