Hong Joon-pyo, a candidate for the presidential primary from the People Power Party, said on the 17th, "I will hold a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump immediately upon taking office."
Candidate Hong noted, "This is in response to the rapidly changing international situation due to the re-election of the Trump administration," emphasizing that "the only person who can stand up to Trump is Hong Joon-pyo."
On that day, Hong announced a national defense, unification, and diplomacy reform plan that includes a total of 17 tasks at his campaign office in Yeouido, Yeongdeungpo District, Seoul.
Candidate Hong emphasized once again the representative policy for North Korea's nuclear response, the "nuclear balance between the North and South."
He argued that in order to achieve this, it is necessary to promote "NATO-style nuclear sharing," the redeployment of tactical nuclear weapons to South Korea, and to consider enhancing nuclear capabilities through the possibility of "self-nuclear armament."
He also stressed the necessity of substantially securing nuclear fuel reprocessing and uranium enrichment technology through the revision of the Korea-U.S. nuclear agreement.
He also pledged to establish mutual representative offices in both Pyongyang and Seoul as relations between the North and South advance.
Candidate Hong revealed a plan to significantly expand the volunteer military system with the goal of fostering a technology-centered elite military. He expressed his intention to introduce a system of military service points to provide effective support for military personnel, especially focusing on improving the welfare and treatment of professional soldiers to boost morale.
To respond to future warfare, he also proposed strengthening the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) and establishing an AI-based smart defense system. Along with this, he outlined a strategy to complete the "five armed forces system," including the Marine Special Forces and the Korea Space Operations Command, to restructure the military into an offensive power structure.
