Kim Dong-yeon, the governor of Gyeonggi Province, expressed regret over the primary rules set by the leadership of the Democratic Party of Korea during his first meeting with reporters since declaring his candidacy for the 21st presidential election. He revealed his ambitions to focus on economic recovery and political reform if he becomes president and urged former Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung to clarify his position on the constitutional amendment.
On the afternoon of the 13th, Governor Kim held a press conference at 'The Joyful Camp' office in Yeouido, Seoul, and said, 'I am very regretful that the Democratic Party seems to be heading toward a “backup primary” as many media outlets have mentioned,' adding, 'I urge party members to achieve a change of government based on the principles and common sense the Democratic Party has maintained.'
He continued, 'The public primary is a beautiful tradition and source of pride that the Democratic Party has maintained for a long time,' stating, 'It is unreasonable to fear reverse voting when considering the power of the people who brought an end to illegal martial law and insurrection by blocking tanks and the military.'
However, after the Democratic Party Special Regulations Preparatory Committee finalized the 50% party members and 50% public opinion poll structure for the public participation primary, he evaded questions regarding his future course of action. He stated he would decide whether to participate in the primary only after the rules were confirmed.
Governor Kim said, 'I will refrain from answering my approach to the primary rules today,' and added, 'However, I want to point out the unfairness of whether the primary rules in discussion create an uneven playing field and whether the process in which the public participates to select candidates, created after former President Roh Moo-hyun, is denied.'
Governor Kim emphasized that if he becomes president, he will relinquish vested interests and reform all areas, including society, politics, and the economy. He specifically mentioned that if he aims to synchronize the cycle of the 2028 general election and presidential election with constitutional amendment efforts, he could reduce his term. He pointed out that former leader Lee Jae-myung does not show a strong will for constitutional amendment.
Governor Kim stated, 'It is not right to cover up the constitutional amendment under the end of insurrection, and I do not feel a strong will for constitutional amendment,' adding, 'For a politician, even a single word should carry the weight of gold. It is important for the elected person to show their will to the people, be judged, and keep their promises.'
Governor Kim also shared the results of his business trip to Michigan, USA, on the 9th for tariff responses. He announced the establishment of cooperation channels between Gyeonggi Province and Michigan, the establishment of channels between South Korean and American automotive corporations, securing support for companies advancing into Michigan, and the hosting of a mobility show for Korean automotive parts companies. He also mentioned that he discussed tariff responses with Stephen Biegun, former Deputy Secretary of State.
