Chairperson Hwang Woo-yeo of the People Power Party's presidential primary election management committee said on the 9th, “As the chairperson of the committee, I will do my best to ensure that we conduct a primary that unites us while upholding strict neutrality.”
Chairperson Hwang attended the first meeting of the Election Management Committee held at the National Assembly that morning and noted, “The public is watching us with worried eyes and sometimes with encouraging hearts.” The party's election management committee held its first meeting that day to begin discussions on the primary rules.
Chairperson Hwang emphasized, “We will ensure that everyone wishing to become a candidate can participate, compete freely, and respect each other while realizing their dreams and visions.” He added, “This primary will definitely be a venue for unity and a journey of hope being reborn before the public,” and stated, “We will do our best with the committee members to complete the primary and ensure a victory for the People Power Party.”
As the People Power Party anticipates that the number of candidates for the presidential primary may approach up to 15, interest is focusing on the primary rules, which will be the 'rules of the game.'
According to the election management committee and party officials, a scenario is being seriously considered to compress candidates to a final list of two through two to three preliminary rounds (cut-off) to boost enthusiasm for the primary. It is also reported that a plan to conduct the preliminary rounds through a '100% general public opinion survey' is under consideration.
In the 2022 presidential election, the People Power Party reduced the number of candidates from 11 to 8 and then to 4 through the first and second preliminary rounds. As a result, four candidates, including Won Hee-ryong, Yoo Seung-min, Yoon Seok-yeol, and Hong Joon-pyo, participated in the main election.
