Members of the Democratic Party from the National Assembly's Legislative and Judiciary Committee urged the acting President and Prime Minister Han Deok-soo to immediately withdraw the nomination of Lee Wan-kyu, the head of the Legal Affairs Division, and Ham Sang-hoon, a presiding judge at the Seoul High Court, as constitutional justices. The committee plans to pressure the acting prime minister through urgent inquiries and disputes over authority.
Park Beom-gye, a Democratic Party lawmaker and the committee's secretary, held a press conference at the National Assembly's communication hall on the 8th and said, "It is evident that the National Assembly and the public will respond fiercely, yet the acting president pushed forward problem personnel with a controversial figure," and noted that this represents "clear reckless intent."
Park said, "Lee Wan-kyu, the head of the Legal Affairs Division, is one of the three who met with the insurrection mastermind Yoon Suk-yeol immediately after the unconstitutional emergency martial law was lifted," and added, "The Democratic Party declared that it will clarify the invalidity of this nomination through a dispute over authority and a request for a provisional injunction." He emphasized, "Withdraw the nomination of the successor constitutional justice designated by the president immediately and focus solely on your role as acting president."
Democratic Party lawmakers in the Legislative and Judiciary Committee warned that they would hold the acting president legally responsible, claiming that he is abusing his authority to appoint officials under the direction of former President Yoon Suk-yeol. There were also claims that it should be examined whether the Legal Affairs Division head, who previously had membership in the People Power Party, meets the qualifications to be a judge.
Democratic Party lawmaker Seo Young-kyo said, "I think there should be an investigation into whether the acting president is colluding with the ousted former President Yoon," and noted, "Allegations have been raised everywhere that isn’t he the one making appointments all along?" Another party member, Park Gyun-taek, stated, "The acting president must live with disgrace," and insisted, "He must be brought to court."
Democratic Party lawmaker Jang Kyung-tae said, "All political parties maintain records of joining and leaving the party," and warned, "I strongly caution the People Power Party not to have officials destroy evidence, such as deleting records of party membership changes from the party member information system."
