Former People Power Party leader Han Dong-hoon will officially announce his candidacy for the 21st presidential election on the 10th.
Han's team announced that "Former leader Han will declare his candidacy for the 21st presidential election in front of the National Assembly building's stairs at 2 p.m. on April 10."
Han's team told ChosunBiz, "There are elected powers in the National Assembly, and the recent series of events, from constitutional amendments to impeachment, also occurred there. Constitutional amendments should also take place in the National Assembly. (Choosing the National Assembly) carries that meaning."
Former leader Han stepped down from the party leader position last December 16, taking responsibility for the passage of the impeachment motion against former President Yoon Suk-yeol in the National Assembly. At that time, former leader Han suggested a political comeback, saying to his supporters who came to see him off, "Do not try to protect me. I will protect you. I will not give up."
After maintaining a low profile for about two months, he effectively resumed political activities with the publication of a book on February 26. Since then, he has sent messages about his governance philosophy and major policy directions through Facebook, YouTube, and lectures.
Notably, he strongly argues that he will end the old era and open a new era with constitutional amendments, even if it means reducing the term to three years. He plans to lead constitutional amendments if elected in the four-year presidential term and step down in 2028, aligning the terms of the general and presidential elections.
Former leader Han intends to set up his primary campaign camp in the Daehwa Building in Yeouido, which is considered a prime location for elections. The Daehwa Building was used as the campaign offices for late former President Kim Dae-jung in the 1997 presidential election, former President Park Geun-hye during the 2012 presidential election, and former President Yoon Suk-yeol in the 2021 20th presidential election.
