Kweon Seong-dong, the floor leader of the People Power Party, said on the 8th that “whether Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party, declares not to run or runs for the presidential election, he must be defeated.” He also used terms such as “unfeeling, shameless, brazen, and moral insensitivity.”
After the floor leader's meeting held at the National Assembly that morning, he commented on the meaning of his previous statement that “the spirit of the times is national normalization and national stability,” saying, “For national normalization, Lee Jae-myung, who caused the issue, must take responsibility. Since one side has borne legal responsibility, they must also bear political responsibility.”
He noted, “The Constitutional Court’s decision explicitly states, ‘The president’s declaration of a state of emergency was wrong, but the legislative dictatorship by the Democratic Party and the Lee Jae-myung forces, as well as the unilateral operation of the National Assembly, were also wrong,’ saying, ‘Where is there a result without a cause? A parliamentary dictatorship cannot be tolerated, nor can a president’s declaration of a state of emergency; this is the will of the people and the implication contained in the Constitutional Court’s ruling. Ultimately, the nation has been operating abnormally, and as a result, state affairs have not been functioning, so the spirit of this presidential election is stability in state affairs and normalization of the nation.’
The floor leader also stated, “The Constitutional Court’s ruling clearly pointed out the Democratic Party’s legislative dictatorship. It is unacceptable for the Lee Jae-myung forces, who caused this situation, to claim they are justified as if they were good people, misleading the public. The people will not accept this either.”
Previously, at the floor leaders' meeting, he made sharp remarks targeting the leader of the Democratic Party.
In addition to his prepared remarks, he expressed on the spot, “How is it that he can disregard the trial at will, avoid appearing as a witness even while paying hundreds of thousands of won in fines, and yet hurl foul language that cannot be repeated at his sister-in-law, and still lead the Democratic Party toward a one-party dictatorship? What is the source of such capability?” He further asked, “Is there a word that encompasses the terms ‘unfeeling, shameless, brazen, and moral insensitivity’? It would be great if there is a term that can succinctly define that.” He continued, “Calling him a scoundrel like Mayor Hong Joon-pyo seems a bit much. I will look for an appropriate word.”
Regarding the Democratic Party leadership's call for the People Power Party not to nominate a presidential candidate due to the impeachment responsibility of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, he added, “For the dignity and quality of the Republic of Korea, and for the mental health of the people, isn't it true that this leader should not run in the presidential election?”
The floor leader also urged active participation from the Democratic Party in a constitutional amendment focused on restructuring power. He stated at the floor leaders' meeting, “The reason this leader refuses to discuss constitutional amendments is clear. Lee Jae-myung has already made the party a one-man dictatorship and transformed the National Assembly into a one-party legislative body. He intends to win the upcoming early presidential election and become president. In other words, he wants to hold both the legislature and the government in his hands and wield absolute power like a dictator.”
He further emphasized, “Now, it is essential to institutionally enforce restructuring of the power structure so that the president and the legislature exercise their powers with tolerance and restraint,” urging participation in the constitutional amendment.
