Former People Power Party lawmaker Yoo Seung-min demanded on the 7th that the People Power Party introduce a 'complete national primary.'
On this day, Yoo noted on his Facebook, 'If it is a way to win, the party members will understand it willingly. I urge the party leadership and the Election Commission to reflect the people's will through a complete national primary.'
Based on the public sentiment that does not discriminate against political affiliations, Yoo is receiving the highest support among the ruling party's presidential candidates.
According to a public opinion poll conducted by Hanguk Gallup at the request of the Seoul Economic Daily from the 4th to the 5th, when asked about presidential candidate preferences among 480 supporters of the People Power Party and non-affiliated voters based on the People Power Party's primary criterion (50% party member, 50% general public), former lawmaker Yoo had low support at 4%. However, when the survey was expanded to include 1,012 total respondents regardless of party affiliation, Yoo led within the margin of error with 19%.
Yoo pointed out, 'Both conservatism and the People Power Party face a crisis of annihilation,' adding, 'In this serious situation where a president produced by conservatism has been impeached again, as seen in various opinion polls, the electoral battlefield is significantly tilted.' He continued, 'In this crisis, we must conduct and win the presidential election,' emphasizing that 'from now on, all of the party's choices should focus on how to win the presidential election, how to defeat Lee Jae-myung.'
He said, 'I demand a complete national primary,' stating, 'When the party closed its gates and turned a deaf ear to public sentiment, we suffered a serious defeat. When the party opened its gates and leaped into the sea of public opinion, we triumphed.' He added, 'The formula for victory in the 2021 by-election was 100% public sentiment, a “people's candidate.” Winning from the center is winning in war. The party must nominate a “people's candidate” that the public desires, just as the name “People Power Party” suggests, to create hope for victory in the absolutely unfavorable presidential election post-impeachment.'
Currently, the rules for the People Power Party's primary for selecting a presidential candidate reflect 50% party sentiment (party member voting) and 50% public sentiment (general public opinion polls). The party's Election Commission is expected to soon finalize the primary rules and schedule.
