The People Power Party appointed former emergency countermeasures chairperson Hwang Woo-yeo as the chairperson of the election management committee for the presidential primary on the 7th.
On the same day, the People Power Party approved a plan at the emergency committee meeting to appoint former Chairperson Hwang as the chairperson of the presidential primary election management committee and to select 10 commissioners.
Former Chairperson Hwang is a veteran of the party who served as a lawmaker from the 15th to the 19th National Assembly. During the Park Geun-hye administration, he served as the leader of the Saenuri Party (the predecessor of the People Power Party) and as the Minister of Education.
He has stepped in as a closer during major elections or times of crisis for the party. Former Chairperson Hwang managed the schedule and election rules of the party convention as the election management chairperson at the June 11th party convention in 2021, where Lee Jun-seok was elected. He also served as the chairperson of the emergency committee formed after the People Power Party's defeat in the general elections last year.
Spokesperson Shin Dong-wook said after the emergency committee meeting with reporters, "He is a five-term lawmaker from Incheon in the metropolitan area and has served our party for a long time. Most importantly, he recently served as our party's emergency chairperson, so he is well aware of the internal matters of the party," and explained the background of his appointment, stating, "In this regard, we determined he is the right person who can manage the primary in a fair and objective manner."
The vice chairperson of the election management committee will be Lee Yang-soo, the party's secretary-general, by virtue of his position. More than half of the remaining nine commissioners are women. They include incumbent lawmaker Cho Eun-hee (Seoul Seocho-gu Gap), first-term lawmaker Jo Ji-yeon (Gyeongbuk Gyeongsan-si), former lawmaker Jeon Ju-hye (Seoul Gangdong-gap party committee chairperson), former emergency committee member Lee So-hee, and Director Park Geon-hee from the party's media department. Lawmaker Lee Sang-hwi (Gyeongbuk Pohang-si Nam-gu Uljin-gun), lawmaker Park Jun-tae (proportional representative), spokesperson Ho Jun-seok, and party central youth commissioner Kim Chae-su were also appointed as commissioners. Among the nine commissioners, there are two individuals born in the 1990s.
