In the re-election for the mayor of Geoje, held on the 2nd, Democratic Party candidate Byeon Gwang-yong returned to the city's leadership position after three years.
According to the Central Election Management Commission's counting results, Byeon was confirmed as the winner with a vote rate of 60.4% and a counting rate of 81.2% as of 11:50 p.m. that day. The vote rate for the People Power Party's candidate, Park Hwan-ki, was 34.1%.
In this re-election for the mayor of Geoje, four candidates ran, including Byeon and Park, as well as independent candidates Kim Doo-ho and Hwang Young-seok. Given that this is traditionally a region with strong conservative forces, there were predictions that the People Power Party candidate would have an advantage. However, public sentiment differed.
The fact that former Geoje Mayor Park Jong-woo received a disqualification sentence for violating the Public Official Election Act also seems to have influenced public sentiment regarding the election. Byeon, who served as the mayor of Geoje during the 7th elected term, made a return to the city's leadership after three years following his retirement in 2022.
Meanwhile, in the 12th electoral district of Changwon, which elected a Gyeongnam provincial council member that day, People Power Party candidate Jung Hee-sung won with a vote rate of 67.3%. In the by-election for the Yangsan City Council's Masan electoral district, Democratic Party candidate Lee Gi-jun triumphed with a vote rate of 46.5%.
