The People Power Party announced on the 3rd that it would initiate legal actions against Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the Democratic Party, for his statement that there was a plan to massacre 10,000 citizens during the declaration of martial law on Dec. 3.
Joo Jin-woo, legal advisor of the People Power Party, said in a press release that day, “We will take strong legal actions, including criminal complaints, against the false information spread by the leader.” After attending the 77th anniversary memorial ceremony for the April 3 victims in Jeju that morning, the leader told reporters, “The plan for the Dec. 3 military coup included a plan to massacre 5,000 to 10,000 citizens.”
Chairperson Joo noted that this was “a clear falsehood that has not been confirmed at any stage of the investigation or the national assembly inquiry.” He pointed out, “For a party leader to disseminate such provocative and obviously false content, especially the day before the presidential impeachment ruling, is considered a malicious attempt to overturn the decision to dismiss the impeachment.”
He added, “We can no longer tolerate actions that blatantly deny democratic processes and the rule of law, and that divide public opinion with falsehoods.”
