Justice Innovation Party announced on the 29th that it would propose an impeachment motion against Acting Prime Minister Han Duck-soo. If Acting Prime Minister Han does not appoint the Constitutional Court judge nominee, Ma Euhn-hyeok, by the 31st, the party said it would immediately begin impeachment proceedings. However, amidst a national disaster situation where cooperation among the ruling and opposition parties is needed, there are criticisms that the opposition party is expanding political strife.
The Innovation Party stated at a National Assembly press conference the previous day, "There is no longer any meaning in pleading with the Constitutional Court for the removal of President Yoon Suk-yeol, so we have stopped the relay 108 bows, and instead, we will fully exercise the authority of the National Assembly granted by the sovereign people." It also noted, "As Acting Prime Minister Han returns to duty, the obligation to appoint nominee Ma has again arisen, but he is exploiting the situation of the Constitutional Court and acting on behalf of criminal forces, not as an acting president."
The Innovation Party stated, "We will end the constitutional vacuum by impeaching Han Duck-soo, normalize the Constitutional Court, and remove Yoon Suk-yeol as soon as possible," adding, "The previous acting president Choi Sang-mok cannot escape impeachment either. Both individuals must be impeached."
The Democratic Party also hinted at Han's impeachment early on, having already prepared the impeachment motion. Kim Yong-min, the Democratic Party's floor policy chief, said, "We are fully preparing for the possibility of impeachment and have drafted a bill ready for proposal at any time." The group of first-term lawmakers from the Democratic Party, known as 'The Mini-Cho', also issued a statement warning, "We also warn all Cabinet members equally, stating that if the acting president does not succeed and appoint nominee Ma, we will impeach immediately without question."
If nominee Ma is not appointed, they intend to seek ‘total impeachment of the Cabinet’ against all acting prime ministers following Han. Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Moon-soo, who is considered a rising star in the ruling party, stated, "I will actively confront the forces trying to collapse the Republic of Korea," adding, "With unprecedented forest fires causing significant casualties and many affected residents spending sleepless nights in shelters, is this sane?"
Representative Ahn Cheol-soo also wrote on social media, "As soon as the worst forest fires were extinguished, what they brought up was not the normalization of the Republic of Korea like restoring the livelihood economy or normalizing diplomacy, but rather 'impeachment threats'." He also questioned, "In the midst of widespread crises in diplomacy, finance, and livelihood, can we not ask if talking about a total cabinet impeachment, which is unimaginable, is sane?"
