Kweon Young-se, the Chairperson of the People Power Party, will pay respects on the 12th in Daejeon to the late Kim Ha-neul, who was stabbed by a weapon wielded by a teacher. As concerns are raised about the lack of teacher management systems due to this incident, the party plans to propose related legislation within this week.
The Chairperson will visit the funeral hall set up at the Konyang University Hospital at 5:30 p.m. The schedule for the inauguration ceremony of the President of the Korea Association of Women Business Owners, which was originally set for 4:30 p.m., has been canceled. Reports indicated that the Chairperson decided to go to Daejeon after it was known that the father of the deceased requested visits from the representatives of both parties.
The People Power Party is also expected to propose the so-called "Hanul Law" at the party level within this week. Kweon Seong-dong, the floor leader, noted earlier in a strategy meeting that "the People Power Party will do its utmost to prevent such tragedies from occurring in schools again."
Kim Dae-sik, the chief spokesperson for the party, mentioned in a conversation with ChosunBiz that "I will represent the proposal within this week and promote it at the party level." The bill is expected to include improvements to safety management and teacher management systems within schools.
On the 10th, Hanul was stabbed to death by a female teacher in her 40s, who was suffering from depression, on campus. The teacher had been receiving treatment for depression since 2018 and had entered sick leave starting December 9 of last year, but she is understood to have returned to work early. Initially, she had applied for six months of sick leave but returned after just three weeks.
Meanwhile, the National Assembly's Education Committee is scheduled to conduct an emergency inquiry on the 18th to fully review the school safety management system and discuss improvements for safety guarantees.
