The Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) announced that it conducted an international joint simulation exercise on the response to ransomware attacks utilizing generative artificial intelligence (AI) in collaboration with the Asia-Pacific Computer Emergency Response Team (APCERT) on the 29th.
This exercise was conducted assuming a scenario in which a virtual corporation was infected with ransomware created by generative AI, with 26 teams from 20 countries in the Asia-Pacific region participating. The participating countries' response teams analyzed the ransomware, supported recovery efforts, and assessed their practical response capabilities.
KISA emphasized the importance of building and operating backup systems during the training process and concurrently conducted recovery exercises targeting corporations. This year’s training was hosted by KISA as the chair agency of APCERT for the second consecutive year following 2024.
APCERT is an international council established in 2003 for the cooperation of incident response teams in the Asia-Pacific region and conducts simulation exercises on major cybersecurity issues every year.
Lee Sang-jung, head of KISA, noted, "This exercise is a practical response training conducted assuming a case of utilizing generative AI," adding, "We will closely respond to technological advancements and social issues and strengthen cooperation with global relevant organizations to establish a robust response system."
