Samsung Electronics announced that it has signed a foundry (semiconductor contract manufacturing) supply agreement worth 22 trillion won. It is understood that Samsung Electronics plans to mass produce semiconductors for global big tech corporations through a 2nm (nanometer·one billionth of a meter) process.
According to the Financial Supervisory Service's electronic disclosure system on the 28th, Samsung Electronics has received a foundry contract worth 22.7647 trillion won. The contract period runs from the 24th of this month to Dec. 31, 2033. This amount corresponds to 7.6% of Samsung Electronics' total sales. Although Samsung Electronics did not specify its clients through the disclosure, it is known that the company plans to mass produce semiconductors for U.S. big tech corporations using a 2nm process at its fab in Taylor, Texas.
In the meantime, Samsung Electronics' foundry division has suffered from severe order sluggishness, recording quarterly losses worth trillions of won. With this order contract, it is expected to accelerate performance improvement while making efforts to narrow the technology gap in foundry advanced processes with TSMC.
An official in the semiconductor industry noted, "The order contract is very encouraging for Samsung Electronics, which has ceded the market to TSMC in advanced processes below 3nm while struggling with stabilizing yield. Given that this contract has demonstrated the yield and technical capabilities of the 2nm process, it is expected that the anticipation for additional orders will also increase."
