On the 15th, Vice Minister Ryu Je-myung of the Ministry of Science and ICT visited the 'national artificial intelligence (AI) research hub' in Yangjae, Seoul, to share opinions with industry, academia, and research officials.
Vice Minister Ryu noted that they are considering what needs to be done to create three major AI powerhouses that rival the United States and China, stating, 'In order to leap into an AI powerhouse, we must actively lead the changes in AI rather than passively respond to them.' He added, 'We will make every effort to vigorously promote future-oriented research and development (R&D) in AI and to establish the governance to support this.'
Kim Ki-eung, director of the national AI research hub and a professor at KAIST, responded, 'We will work hard with the goal of securing global AI leadership through building research infrastructure, attracting and nurturing talent, and bold financial support from the government.'
The 'national AI research hub' established at the Yangjae Seoul AI Hub last year was founded to enable the government and corporations to conduct AI research together. The Ministry of Science and ICT stated, 'This place aims to be the focal point for AI research of a public-private partnership, where domestic and international researchers can interact and conduct world-class international joint research in AI, while also serving as a platform that concentrates on cultivating global AI leaders and fostering the ecosystem of AI industry, academia, and research.'
