Foreign media evaluated that the new foldable smartphone unveiled by Samsung Electronics has achieved "tremendous improvements compared to its predecessor."
On the 9th (local time), Samsung Electronics held the "Galaxy Unpacked 2025" event at the Duggal Greenhouse in Brooklyn, New York, unveiling the "Galaxy Z Fold7" and "Galaxy Z Flip7."
Local media also reported on the event that day, showing great interest. Reuters reported, "In the case of the Galaxy Z Fold7 (hereafter Fold7), the weight has been reduced by 10% compared to its predecessor, and the thickness is 26% slimmer," adding, "Analysts evaluate that the new product has partially addressed the volume and weight issues that were disadvantages of foldable phones," noting that it would "enhance the premium image of the Samsung brand."
The IT-focused media The Verge stated, "The Fold7 is a world of difference compared to the Fold6. The Fold7 is much thinner and lighter, while the Fold6 looks like a large, bulky mass. The two feel completely like different phones."
U.S. economic media CNBC also reported, "The Fold7 has a thickness of just 8.9mm when folded and 4.2mm when opened, with a weight of 215g, making it significantly lighter than its previous model," adding, "These specifications are similar to those of competitors such as China's Honor Magic V5 and Oppo Find N5."
There were also critiques about the battery and price. CNBC stated, "Samsung's new foldable generation has a battery capacity that is much more limited than other devices on the market," noting that "the Fold7 is equipped with a 4,400mAh battery, which is less capacity than the 6,100mAh of the Magic V5 or the 5,600mAh of the Find N5."
The Verge also commented, "The price of the Fold7 is $1,999. Considering that all prices have risen, the tariff situation, and the research and development expense spent on the new, thinner foldable, it's not surprising," while also noting, "The Fold6, priced at $1,899, was not exactly cheap, so the phrase 'a $2,000 smartphone' might feel odd."
Various analyses regarding market changes due to Samsung's launch of this foldable phone have emerged. Reuters noted, "Samsung has stepped in to check Chinese competitors in the high-profit premium market that Apple has yet to enter," explaining, "In 2023, Samsung relinquished the position of the world's No. 1 smartphone maker to Apple, and competition with Chinese manufacturers such as Huawei and Honor is also intensifying. The institutional sector of its core semiconductor business has been struggling due to delays in supplying AI chips to NVIDIA."
Samsung Electronics has frozen the price of the "Galaxy Z Flip7." Additionally, it introduced the "Galaxy Z Flip7 Fan Edition (FE)," the first mid-range model in its foldable phone lineup. Bloomberg reported, "Samsung is targeting the popularization of foldable phones," evaluating that this is a strategy to solidify its position in the foldable market and expand its mass appeal, while adding that it is a proactive response before Apple launches its first foldable phone next year.
