Samsung Electronics announced on the 8th that it will acquire the U.S. digital healthcare company 'Xealth.'
On the 7th, Samsung Electronics signed an acquisition agreement with Xealth. Based on this, it plans to provide 'Connected Care' services in the U.S. The acquisition amount has been agreed to be kept confidential. Samsung Electronics aims to complete the acquisition process of Xealth within the year.
'Connected Care' refers to services that connect the wellness sector, which cares for daily health, and healthcare in the medical field. Samsung Electronics noted, "This is part of the vision of Samsung Health to help Galaxy users conveniently manage their health and even prevent diseases."
Xealth, acquired by Samsung Electronics, is a company that provides various digital healthcare solutions on a single platform. It was established in 2016 as a spinoff from Providence Health System, a major hospital group in the U.S.
Xealth has built collaborative relationships with about 500 hospitals, including major U.S. hospital groups like Providence Health System, Advocate Health, and Banner Health. It also partners with about 70 digital healthcare solution corporations related to diabetes, pregnancy, and surgery.
The platform provided by Xealth allows medical staff to comprehensively assess patient conditions and prescribe or recommend digital healthcare solutions to them. It also supports real-time access to patients' health statuses. Doctors at hospitals that have partnered with Xealth can recommend apps from solution partner corporations that allow diabetes patients to manage their blood sugar and lifestyle, enabling them to monitor blood sugar changes, dietary adjustments, and exercise records at a glance.
Through this acquisition, Samsung Electronics can expand its digital healthcare sector. It has positioned the facilitation of 'digital healthcare technology' to settle in daily life as its business vision, which is why it has continuously advanced sensor technology integrated into wearable devices.
The company stated, "Samsung Electronics' wearable devices have become a key tool for meticulously managing users' health throughout the day," and added, "We focused on integrating health information collected from products like Galaxy smartphones, watches, and rings into the 'Samsung Health' service so that individuals can manage their health independently."
Samsung Electronics plans to provide Connected Care services that link users' vital data measured by wearable devices with specialized medical services using the Xealth platform. Once Connected Care services are fully operational, gaps in information caused by separately managing patients' usual states and hospital medical records will be resolved, and the connection between patients and medical staff will be further enhanced.
Samsung Electronics plans to particularly focus on disease prevention. The intention is to further expand the digital healthcare ecosystem to connect with home appliances and provide personalized services.
Previously, Samsung Electronics has acquired corporations related to future growth industries such as robotics (Rainbow Robotics), AI (Oxford Semantic Technologies), MedTech (Sonio), audio and automotive (Lun, Masimo Audio Division), and AI data center cooling (Flact).
Roh Tae-Moon, acting head of Samsung Electronics' DX division, said, "Samsung Electronics aims to help people manage their health in daily life through innovative technologies and cooperation with industry partners," and added, "By leveraging Xealth's extensive healthcare network and expertise, we will set a new standard for ultra-personalized, prevention-oriented care."
Michael McSharry, CEO of Xealth, stated, "Samsung Electronics and Xealth share a common goal of realizing true connected care in the healthcare sector and taking digital healthcare to the next level." He continued, "By combining vital data collected from wearable devices with hospital medical records, we will provide insights into patients and showcase new possibilities in digital healthcare."
