Samsung Electronics' use of renewable energy last year exceeded 10,000 gigawatt hours (GWh) for the first time.

According to the '2025 Sustainability Management Report' released by Samsung Electronics on the 27th, the company's renewable energy usage last year was 10,069 GWh, an increase of 8.4% compared to the previous year.

Previously, the growth rate of renewable energy usage in 2023 (9,289 GWh) compared to the previous year (8,704 GWh) was about 6.7%.

As renewable energy usage increased, the renewable energy conversion rate also rose. Last year, Samsung Electronics' renewable energy conversion rate was 31.4%, while in 2023 and 2022, it was 31.0% and 30.7%, respectively.

In the case of the device experience (DX) institutional sector, the renewable energy conversion rate last year was 93.4%, while the device solutions (DS) sector, responsible for semiconductor business, was recorded at 24.8%.

To expand the use of renewable energy, the company introduced solar renewable energy supply contract facilities (PPA) for the first time at domestic business sites last year. The DX sector completed solar PPA facilities with a capacity of a total of 5.8 megawatts (MW) at its Gwangju and Gumi manufacturing sites in March last year. Additionally, the Gwangju site signed an additional solar PPA contract of 10 MW in February this year. The DS sector signed a solar PPA totaling 115 MW at its domestic business sites last June and also entered into a 10-year PPA contract for a 254 MW tidal power plant at Sihwa Lake with the Korea Water Resources Corporation.

Samsung Electronics also disclosed the average power consumption improvement rate for representative models on sale for 2024 in the report. By applying high-efficiency energy technologies, the average power consumption of seven models with the same specifications and performance compared to 2019 has been reduced by 31.5%. The power consumption improvement rates in 2022 and 2023 were 16.4% and 25.1%, respectively.

As of the end of last year, the number of domestic employees at Samsung Electronics reached a record high of 125,297. This figure represents an increase of about 4,500 from 120,756 at the end of 2023. The number of domestic employees has been increasing every year since it surpassed 100,000 in 2019.
