Google launched an artificial intelligence (AI) coding agent, entering the developer market.
On the 25th (local time), Google announced that it will launch the AI coding tool 'Gemini CLI' (Command Line Interface) globally. This AI tool helps reduce the complexity of traditional programming interfaces, allowing developers to work with AI using natural language. Taylor Mullen, a senior software engineer at Google, noted, "With Gemini CLI, you can converse with computers using natural language and solve problems, doing much more than before."
Using this tool, developers can directly utilize the Gemini AI in the command input screen. Instead of having to write complex code line by line, they can simply input commands like "make a website," and the AI generates the code for them. Google explained that this agent is primarily an AI coding assistant, but it can also be used for various tasks such as creating simple websites or generating videos.
By using Google's video generation AI model 'BIO3', they can create videos or generate research reports through deep research tools, as well as access Google search for real-time information retrieval. Google has made this tool open source, allowing anyone to freely modify and redistribute the code. Anyone with a Google account can access Gemini CLI.
Ryan J. Salva, Google's senior product director, said, "The AI coding agent will significantly impact the way developers and all creators work over the next decade," adding that "students, developers, and freelancers should all be able to use the same tools."
As Google introduces the AI coding agent, competition surrounding the AI coding market is expected to intensify against companies like OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, and Anthropic. OpenAI previously unveiled an AI coding tool called 'Codex' last month, while Anthropic, considered a competitor to OpenAI, also showcased 'Claude Code' in February.
