The Ministry of Science and ICT is promoting a project that utilizes domestic artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors to create the effect of 'urban improvement.'
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 23rd that it has selected the final tasks for the 'on-device AI service demonstration and expansion' project. This project aims to discover innovative on-device AI services, activate a domestic AI semiconductor ecosystem through large-scale demonstrations at the urban level, and enrich the lives of citizens.
On-device AI refers to technology that can implement AI on devices without internet connection. It offers high security regarding personal information and can provide personalized services. Low-latency AI service implementation is also considered an advantage. The goal of this project is to address various social issues and enhance convenience in daily life, such as disaster response and crime prevention, by equipping devices with domestic AI semiconductors.
The Ministry of Science and ICT noted, 'We will apply domestic AI semiconductors to CCTV and drones and implement safety services closely linked to everyday life,' adding, 'We expect it to be effectively utilized in response to damages like the recent large forest fire.'
The Ministry of Science and ICT supports the development of customized on-device AI services that reflect regional conditions and field demands, allowing citizens to quickly experience the benefits of urban improvement. From March 31 to the end of April, it conducted a call for proposals to promote urban-level demonstrations. Among the 10 consortia that applied, three were selected, and the government plans to begin the formal urban demonstration for two years, starting with an investment of 8.55 billion won.
The selected project 'Specialized on-device AI service demonstration for the marine city of Busan' will develop and demonstrate real-time detection and response services using aquatic robots and AI CCTV for ▲ oil spill prevention ▲ continuous removal of marine debris.
Through the 'early forest fire warning and autonomous AI safety monitoring on-device demonstration' project, technology will be developed to detect forest fires early using AI CCTV and drones. The project aims to develop and demonstrate a system that predicts the spread path of forest fires in real-time, protecting local residents and forests in the Sangju County and Hadong County areas of Gyeongsangnam-do.
The 'Yeongju ON: A safe and improved city opened by on-device' project aims to develop and demonstrate an integrated safety monitoring system that uses drones and AI CCTV to monitor the city in real-time for crisis situations such as crime and collapse, as well as monitor environmental risks like forest fires and algal blooms in real-time.
The Ministry of Science and ICT stated, 'Since we are the first to promote urban-level demonstrations of on-device AI services using domestic AI semiconductors, we will review in advance any aspects requiring regulatory exemptions during the service development and demonstration process,' adding plans to actively support the project through connections with regulatory sandboxes to ensure it progresses smoothly.
