LG Display has filed its first patent infringement lawsuit against a Chinese display company in a U.S. court.
According to industry sources on the 16th, LG Display filed a patent infringement lawsuit on the 13th (local time) in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas against Tianma, claiming infringement on a total of seven technology patents, including technology that integrates touch functionality into mobile panels.
In its complaint, LG Display alleged that Tianma’s liquid crystal display (LCD) panels and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels for mobile use, as well as its LCD panels for vehicles, infringe on multiple patents held by LG Display.
This is the first time LG Display has filed a patent lawsuit against a Chinese company. It is interpreted as a willingness to curb attempts at technology theft by China, as technological competitiveness is crucial for market leadership.
An official from LG Display said, "Patent infringement is an act of unlawfully appropriating the time, capital, and human resources invested in technology development," adding, "We will respond strongly through litigation."
