SK shieldus announced on the 16th that it has received approval for its short-term greenhouse gas reduction targets from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), the first in the domestic security industry.
SBTi is a global verification organization established in 2015 by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to implement the Paris Agreement. SK shieldus is the first domestic security company to receive approved reduction targets from SBTi. It submitted its targets in January and recently passed verification.
The recently approved targets include all greenhouse gas emissions directly emitted by SK shieldus (Scope 1), indirect emissions from electricity usage (Scope 2), and indirect emissions occurring throughout the supply chain (Scope 3).
Based on emissions in 2023, SK shieldus plans to reduce Scope 1 greenhouse gases by 99% by 2029 and to transition all business sites' electricity to 100% renewable energy by 2026, maintaining this until 2030. The reduction target for Scope 3 greenhouse gases is 55% by 2033.
To achieve this, SK shieldus plans to expand its efforts to reduce environmental impact through the shift to electric vehicle (EV) based dispatch systems, the purchase of green premiums, and enhanced resource circulation. It will also strengthen ESG collaboration across the entire value chain, including with partners and customers, and will work with suppliers to reduce energy consumption of security equipment.
An official from SK shieldus noted, “This SBTi approval is a symbolic achievement that demonstrates SK shieldus’s leadership in sustainable management as a representative security company in Korea,” adding, “We will continue to create a sustainable security industry ecosystem centered on science-based reduction strategies.”
