The Korea Communications Commission will recently begin a fact-finding investigation related to the delayed cancellation cases of SK Telecom's high-speed internet.
The commission announced on the 12th that it will conduct an investigation into the possible violations of the Telecommunications Business Act, as cases have emerged where high-speed internet users of SK Telecom experienced delays in cancellations due to the 'one-stop transfer service' not being properly processed when terminating contracts.
The one-stop transfer service is a system that allows high-speed internet users to move to another service provider without having to submit a separate cancellation request to the existing provider. Instead, they just need to apply for service with the new provider, allowing onboarding and cancellation of the existing contract to be handled simultaneously.
This system, introduced by the commission in 2020 for user convenience, is currently being implemented among telecommunications companies and comprehensive cable broadcasting service providers.
However, following recent issues, the commission plans to focus on investigating whether SK Telecom has delayed or restricted contract cancellations without justifiable reasons.
A commission official noted, 'To ensure users can freely and conveniently choose their telecom provider, we also plan to review possible improvements to the one-stop transfer service system.'
