Google is creating a new position of 'Chief AI Designer' for its executives, Reuters reported on the 11th. This comes as competition surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) technology development intensifies, in order to quickly integrate AI technology into its products, and has appointed Koray Kabukcuoglu, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the AI organization DeepMind, as the first 'Chief AI Designer'.
He will assume the role of Senior Vice President (SVP), reporting directly to Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sundar Pichai, as a key executive overseeing the development of Google's future AI products. To this end, he will move his workplace from London, where DeepMind is located, to Mountain View, California, where Google’s headquarters are located.
Pichai noted in an internal message that Google is "entering a new phase of AI platform transformation" and stated, "He will drive the product strategy and accelerate the pace of integrating world-class models into products." He added, "This will help integrate AI models into products more seamlessly and achieve greater efficiency through faster development."
Kabukcuoglu, considered one of the leading experts in the field of deep learning, obtained a Ph.D. in computer science from New York University. During this time, he was mentored by Yann LeCun, the chief scientist of Meta AI, who is regarded as one of the "four AI kings." He joined DeepMind as one of the early members in 2012 and played a key role in the AlphaGo project, which became famous for its matches against Go master Lee Sedol. Since then, he has served as the CTO, leading a research team and overseeing the overall technology strategy at DeepMind.
The establishment of the 'Chief AI Designer' position has occurred as Google faces pressure to create products that generate revenue from its core AI technology, CNBC reported. DeepMind possesses core AI technology and is developing AI technology, but the outlet reported that it has struggled to show clear revenue.
