Samsung Display announced on the 11th that it will participate in the world's largest extended reality (XR) exhibition, 'AWE (Augmented World Expo) USA 2025', held until the 12th in Long Beach, California (local time).

AWE is the world's largest XR exhibition, which began in 2010. Corporations manufacturing XR hardware such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR), as well as content creators and investors, participate broadly.

This year, more than 200 global corporations leading the spatial computing ecosystem, including Google, Meta, Qualcomm, and Chinese companies Pico and XR, participated in the exhibition. This is Samsung Display's first participation in AWE.

At this exhibition, Samsung Display will showcase its latest technology in the OLEDoS (organic light-emitting diode on silicon wafer) field, which is a core technology in the XR market. OLEDoS is a super high-definition display that deposits organic materials on a silicon wafer to create pixel sizes of tens of micrometers (㎛), serving as a key component of XR headsets.

Samsung Display will introduce a 1.4-inch product achieving industry-leading resolution among red, green, and blue (RGB) OLEDoS with 5000 PPI (pixels per inch). Though it is tiny at 1.4 inches, about the size of a wristwatch screen, the pixel count is three times that of a 4K TV, providing a lifelike quality experience even right in front of the eyes.

They will also showcase a 1.3-inch RGB OLEDoS (4200 PPI) with a brightness of 20,000 nits. This product features MLA (micro lens array) technology, which improves screen brightness and viewing angles using the principles of convex lenses.

The development achievements of eMagin, a subsidiary of Samsung Display, can also be verified. eMagin will unveil white OLEDoS and RGB OLEDoS products, each with a pixel density of 2600 PPI, which is smaller than an adult's fingernail at 0.62 inches. The white OLEDoS product is currently in mass production, while the RGB OLEDoS product undergoing customer evaluations is expected to begin mass production next year.

Meanwhile, Samsung Display has a policy of expanding its next-generation growth base centered around OLEDoS technology in the XR market, which has significant potential. According to market research firm Omdia, the global market size for XR panels (in terms of revenue) is expected to grow from about $600 million (about 820 billion won) this year to $4.1 billion (about 56 trillion won) by 2030, with an average annual growth rate of 47% over the next five years. Among these, OLEDoS panels are projected to occupy about 70-80% of the entire market.
