On the 10th, the artificial intelligence (AI) data cloud corporation Snowflake announced its plans to acquire CrunchData. CrunchData is a specialist corporation in open-source "PostgreSQL."
With this acquisition, Snowflake plans to directly integrate CrunchData's PostgreSQL databases into the Snowflake AI data cloud. Based on this, a "Snowflake PostgreSQL" in the form of a private preview will be launched.
A representative from Snowflake noted that with this service, "users can build applications with an enterprise- and developer-friendly PostgreSQL while complying with the U.S. federal government's cloud security certification (FedRAMP) regulations on the Snowflake AI data cloud."
"PostgreSQL" is reported to be used by 49% of all developers. Snowflake PostgreSQL utilizes CrunchData's essential performance metrics, built-in extensions, and intuitive interface to support the entire lifecycle of enterprise workloads, from development to operations.
Snowflake promised ongoing support for existing CrunchData customers and the PostgreSQL community even after the acquisition is completed.
Vivek Ragunathan, Senior Vice President of Engineering at Snowflake, said, "Our goal is to provide the most trusted and comprehensive data and AI platform," adding, "This acquisition reflects the significant market opportunity of $350 billion and the demands of real customers who wish to use PostgreSQL on the Snowflake AI data cloud."
Paul Lawrence, Co-Founder of CrunchData, said, "Through our rigorous security and compliance efforts, CrunchData has established itself as a trusted PostgreSQL partner in regulated industries, including federal agencies, Fortune 500 financial institutions, and large Software as a Service (SaaS) corporations. By collaborating with Snowflake, we will support customers already utilizing PostgreSQL to maintain higher reliability and security while operating critical workloads on the Snowflake platform."
