The Personal Information Protection Commission announced on the 10th that it has selected four products, including home cameras and robotic vacuum cleaners, as targets for the '2025 Privacy by Design (PbD)' pilot certification and will proceed with verification. PbD refers to a design concept that adequately considers privacy protection elements throughout all stages of a product or service, including planning, manufacturing, and disposal, to prevent violations of personal information.
The Personal Information Commission has been pilot operating the PbD certification since 2023 to ensure the safety of products with personal information collection capabilities, such as home closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) and robotic vacuum cleaners, and to strengthen manufacturers' responsibilities and consumers' choices. So far, four products have been certified.
This year, the certification targets have been expanded to include not only home cameras and smart appliances closely related to daily life but also advanced technology fields like autonomous driving. As a result, four products—home cameras, in-vehicle video recording devices, home robots, and robotic vacuum cleaners—have been chosen for certification, and substantive safety verification will commence this month.
The Personal Information Commission will evaluate these products based on ▲basic matters related to personal information ▲legality of personal information processing ▲enhancement of information security and privacy ▲organizational protective measures, among others. If the necessary standards are not met or vulnerabilities are found, they will request corrective measures, and if all standards are met, certification will be granted. Final certification is expected to be confirmed by the end of the year.
