LG Uplus announced on the 9th that it has blocked about 120,000 suspected smishing site accesses since the launch of its internet product 'premium safe compensation plan' four months ago.
The 'premium safe compensation plan' launched by LG Uplus in January enhances security by blocking access to harmful sites and provides compensation in the event of financial losses due to smishing or phishing. Smishing is a blend of short message service (SMS) and phishing, referring to scams that induce access to URL links included in text messages or emails to steal personal information.
To prevent related customer harm, LG Uplus is utilizing lists of suspected smishing sites collected by the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA), the Korean National Police Agency, and security firms. When a subscriber attempts to access one of these sites, it is blocked to enhance security. As of the end of last month, the number of customers subscribed to the plan has rapidly increased to over 50,000.
LG Uplus stated, "To respond to rapidly changing and diverse security breaches, we plan to strengthen partnerships with affiliates and introduce an artificial intelligence (AI) engine for suspicious URL collection," and noted, "The introduction of the AI engine will not only shorten the collection cycle for harmful URLs but also more effectively detect and secure a variety of harmful URLs."
LG Uplus is offering benefits that allow subscribers of plans supporting speeds over 500 Mbps to additionally select the smart home speaker 'CLOVA Clock+3' along with Wi-Fi devices.
Oh In-ho, executive director for LG Uplus's home business, said, "In an era where cyber attacks threaten daily life, making sure customers can use the internet safely is our top priority," and added, "We will continue to enhance service quality and diversify the basic benefits to innovate customers' internet usage experience."
