On the 5th, LG Uplus announced that it has improved the functionality to allow users of its international roaming plan to use the SIM protection service.

The SIM protection service prevents others from using the customer's SIM (USIM - Universal Subscriber Identification Module) or eSIM (embedded SIM) to access services on different devices. This service has become increasingly important as SK Telecom's hacking incident compromised 26,957,749 SIM information records.

Once signed up for the SIM protection service, management of SIM and device information is linked. Even if a counterfeit SIM is inserted into another device, services such as currency and data will be blocked for that device. The company noted, “This service can help prevent financial losses caused by counterfeit SIMs” and added, “In anticipation of the summer vacation season, we have improved the technology to allow customers who signed up for international roaming products to use the SIM protection service.”

Even if registered before the technology improvement, customers can receive the SIM protection service while on international roaming without any separate application process. LG Uplus plans to provide upgraded services for customers returning to Korea after their stay abroad. Customers using low-cost mobile phones on the LG Uplus network can also sign up via the websites of their current low-cost mobile providers.

A representative from LG Uplus stated, “By signing up for the SIM protection service, we can prevent crimes caused by illegal SIM duplication,” and added, “We will continuously strengthen our information security capabilities to ensure that customers can use services with peace of mind.”
