Meta Platforms is reportedly in negotiations with major Hollywood studios such as Disney and A24 to enhance the content of its premium virtual reality (VR) headset 'Roma,' scheduled for release next year. This content is expected to involve investments of millions of dollars on the condition of exclusive availability for a certain period.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on the 4th that Meta is developing a VR headset under the code name 'Roma' and is working to secure episodic and immersive content based on famous intellectual property (IP). Meta will bear the production costs of the content and plans to offer it exclusively on its devices for a certain period before distributing it on other platforms in 2D format.
Meta is engaging in various discussions, including remaking existing content to suit VR and developing new content specifically for VR. It has already signed an exclusive content contract with Lightstorm Entertainment, the production company of director James Cameron, and Disney is developing 'Star Wars'-based VR experience content for the Meta Quest.
'Roma' is a premium device with enhanced performance and high resolution compared to the Meta Quest, and its design is said to resemble Meta's Ray-Ban AI glasses more closely than the Quest or Apple Vision Pro. The price is expected to be set below $1,000, making it more expensive than the Quest but cheaper than the Apple Vision Pro, which costs $3,500.
Meanwhile, the 'Reality Labs' institutional sector, responsible for Meta's VR and smart glasses products, recorded $2.1 billion in revenue and a $17.7 billion loss last year.
