Minister Yoo Sang-im of the Ministry of Science and ICT visited the United States for discussions on securing graphics processing units (GPUs) with companies like NVIDIA, while a pre-briefing for cloud service providers (CSPs) was held domestically on the 16th.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it held a briefing on the construction and operation of secured GPUs for the cloud industry at the LW Convention Center in Jung-gu, Seoul, this morning, focusing on discussions regarding new products from NVIDIA. The briefing was held to share detailed information on the 'advanced GPU acquisition promotion plan' that was approved at the economic ministers meeting and the meeting on strengthening industrial competitiveness on the 14th.
The Ministry of Science and ICT will push for a public recruitment of CSPs to collaborate on securing and constructing advanced GPUs next week. It plans to complete the selection of cloud corporations and sign agreements by July, and to actively promote the acquisition of advanced GPUs.
The Ministry of Science and ICT is prioritizing a plan to secure 10,000 GPUs within the year, consisting of 6,400 units of NVIDIA's H200 and 3,600 units of B200 through supplementary budget measures. Particularly, considering that the new Blackwell-based B200 has very limited introduction experience in the country, it believes that sufficient infrastructure, such as power, cooling, and network, must be established before its introduction. However, the types of models and purchasing proportions have not yet been finalized. The Ministry noted that Minister Yoo is also discussing software aspects with NVIDIA.
