Samsung Display announced on the 6th that its polarizer-free OLED technology 'LEADTM' has received the 'Displays of the Year' award from the Society for Information Display (SID).

The SID awards outstanding display technologies released each year, and this year's ceremony will take place on the 11th (local time) during 'Display Week' in San Jose, California.

The SID evaluated the 'LEADTM' technology in its magazine, noting that it enhanced brightness and improved outdoor visibility using the OCF (On Cell Film) method, which replaces traditional polarizers with opaque plastic sheet forms, while also reducing panel thickness by about 20%.

'LEADTM' is a technology that Samsung Display commercialized for the first time in the world in 2021, featuring a built-in external light reflection suppression function in OLED panels that allows for the removal of polarizers, achieving both increased brightness and reduced power consumption. Initially applied to foldable smartphones, its application range has since expanded to bar-type smartphones and IT products.

Samsung Display defines the characteristics of this technology as low power, eco-friendly, high brightness, and slim design, promoting it in the market under its own brand name 'LEADTM.'

A Samsung Display representative stated, 'LEADTM is a technology that expands the applicability of OLED while addressing its structural limitations,' adding, 'We expect it to be applicable to IT devices where low power and high brightness are important in the future.'
