On the 30th, the National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information, Broadcasting and Communications Committee added Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, as a witness for the hearing on the SK Telecom hacking incident. The committee stated that it needs to hear Chairman Chey's stance on specific response measures, including the waiver of early termination fees for users related to the SK Telecom SIM card data leak.
Chairperson Choi Min-hee noted, "I demand that Chey Tae-won, chairman of SK Group, attend today’s hearing." Earlier, Chairperson Choi stated, "Deciding to summon Chairman Chey as a witness is to focus on inquiries about the waiver of fees during number portability," and added, "If Chairman Chey does not attend, we will hold a hearing before this meeting concludes to resolve this issue completely."
Earlier, lawmakers belonging to the committee emphasized during the hearing that SK Telecom should waive fees for subscribers wishing to change their numbers. The lawmakers unified in stating to Ryu Young-sang, president of SK Telecom, that "the SK Telecom terms of service stipulate that if a reason attributable to the company is recognized, customers wishing to terminate should not incur a fee," urging that "SK Telecom and the related agencies must make a decision today."
In response, President Ryu stated, "I will decide after a comprehensive review," avoiding a definitive answer. Deputy Minister of Science and ICT Kang Do-hyun remarked regarding the waiver of fees that "there is no consideration for the profits and losses of specific companies" and stated, "We will review this clearly from a legal standpoint and handle it alongside the aftermath of the incident."
