British home appliances company Dyson has completely redesigned the hair care device 'Airwrap' that can dry and style wet hair and has launched it first in the South Korean market. The Airwrap can create waves even when the hair is wet, making it a so-called 'wind curling iron' that has gained explosive popularity in the country.
Typically, curling irons need to style hair when it is dry using heating plates, but the Airwrap has made it easier to shape hair using air. The new product features a newly developed motor that has doubled the air power compared to the existing Airwrap, and it has now become possible to straighten hair using this air.
On the 28th, Will Kerr, Dyson's Vice President of Beauty Product Development, introduced the 'Airwrap Coanda Two X Multi Styler and Dryer' for the first time in the world at the Dyson pop-up store established in Seongdong-gu's Seongsu-dong in Seoul, stating, "It is equipped with the most powerful hair motor in Dyson's history, encapsulating 15 years of hair research." He noted, "We have completely redesigned a product that can be used in various ways for drying hair, curling, and straight styling with one device."
As a differentiating factor from the existing Airwrap, Kerr highlighted, "We have implemented air that is twice as powerful to allow for faster drying of hair while styling, and we have enabled the hair to be straightened using air instead of heat." He added that an artificial intelligence (AI)-based sensor has been equipped for the first time with the 'Two X glass bead thermistor' to measure air temperature more than 1,000 times per second, regulating heat to protect hair from excessive thermal damage.
Dyson plans to re-attack the domestic premium styler market by emphasizing improvements made to the key aspect of the dryer, 'air.' Launched for the first time in 2018, the Airwrap changed market standards with consumer evaluations stating, "You can style easily without going to a salon," despite being about ten times more expensive than regular curling irons. However, the existing product had a drawback of weaker air power compared to standard hair dryers.
To improve this, Dyson developed a new hair care digital motor, 'Hypermedium 2 Motor,' which has been applied to this new product for the first time. This motor can reach up to 150,000 rotations per minute without increasing noise, which is nine times faster than a Formula 1 car engine. Dyson stated, "Not only can you dry hair quickly with powerful air, but styling has also become much easier." The internal wires of the motor are as thin as human hair thickness (90 micrometers), allowing for increased air power while reducing weight by 5%.
Styling tools for curling or straightening hair have also been entirely redesigned. The device offers six styling tools, enabling various styles with the use of a pin nozzle, volume brush, curling nozzle, and more. The price has increased by about 26% compared to the existing Airwrap, now costing 879,000 won. Kim Sun-woo, Dyson's styling ambassador, demonstrated the product on-site, stating, "You can achieve a voluminous straight hair look using just air, and the curls can be made more vivid than with the existing Airwrap, making it easy for anyone to challenge new styles."
