On the 21st, the Webtoon Labor Union announced plans to file a complaint against Kakao Entertainment with the Labor Committee for refusing collective bargaining.
The Webtoon Labor Union, to which the authors serialized through Kakao Entertainment belong, submitted a collective bargaining request to Kakao Entertainment on the 11th but received a rejection notice on the 17th. The company reportedly stated that webtoon authors do not qualify as employees under labor law. The union claimed that the company's refusal to negotiate constitutes an unfair labor practice under the Labor Union Act.
The union expressed regret over what it described as "the worst reply that is difficult to understand" and stated that it would file a complaint against Kakao Entertainment with the Labor Committee.
The union has been demanding negotiations, stating that the rights of creative workers must be discussed during the sale process amid recent rumors of Kakao Entertainment's sale.
