Google announced on the 21st that it will begin accepting applications for the ‘2025 Google PhD Fellowship’ program aimed at PhD researchers active in promising fields such as computer science and artificial intelligence (AI).

The Google PhD Fellowship is a global program that has been running since 2009, aimed at discovering PhD students conducting excellent research across computer science, including algorithms, machine learning, mobile computing, and databases. To date, more than 800 participants have joined worldwide, and 29 individuals have been selected in South Korea over the past 10 years since 2015.

Researchers selected for this program in South Korea will receive research funding of up to $10,000 (14,179,000 won), along with mentoring from experts belonging to Google Research, networking with the Google researcher community, and various other benefits. The application period runs until May 15.

Previous domestic awardees noted that they gained insights into their research direction through the Google PhD Fellowship, as well as experiences that connect academia and industry. They encouraged others to apply, stating that they gained confidence in their research along with tangible results throughout the challenging process.

Aimin Zhu, lead of Google.org for the Asia-Pacific region’s basic science, said, “As much as Google believes in positive technological change for the world, we will actively support talents engaged in innovative research.”
