LG Electronics announced on the 9th that its 2025 model OLED TVs have received the 'Carbon Footprint' certification from the British non-profit certification organization Carbon Trust. As a result, LG Electronics has obtained carbon footprint certification for its OLED TV new products for five consecutive years since 2021.
Carbon Trust assesses the carbon dioxide emissions and environmental impacts generated throughout the entire process from product production to distribution, use, and disposal, granting carbon footprint certifications. The 2025 LG OLED TV models G5 (83/77/65/55 inches) and C5 (83 inches) received the 'Carbon Reducing' certification for reducing carbon emissions compared to existing models.
Additionally, LG Electronics proved the sustainability of its products by obtaining the 'Resource Efficiency' certification from Intertek, a global testing and certification organization based in the UK. This certification is only granted to products that pass strict evaluation criteria, including ▲ material usage efficiency (recyclable design, reduction of harmful substances, ease of repair, etc.) ▲ energy efficiency ▲ use of recycled materials. The LG OLED TV models M5, G5, C5, and B5 have received this certification, recognizing their environmentally friendly design in global markets.
The reason LG OLED TVs receive high evaluations in various and stringent environmental certification reviews is that they have fewer components than LCD TVs, which require separate backlights, and extensively utilize lightweight composite materials. The 65-inch OLED TV uses about 60% less plastic and is approximately 20% lighter than major brand LCD TVs of the same size.
LG Electronics also expects to use about 16,000 tons less plastic for OLED TV manufacturing this year compared to the same quantity of LCD TVs. As plastic usage decreases, the carbon emissions during production and transportation processes are expected to reduce by about 84,000 tons, which is equivalent to the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by 11,000 soccer field-sized forests of 30-year-old pine trees in one year.
Additionally, LG Electronics used about 30% of recycled plastic in the total plastic used for TV manufacturing, including OLED TVs, last year. This resulted in approximately 6,300 tons of recycled waste plastic. This year, the company expects to increase the ratio of recycled plastic usage to around 50%, resulting in an estimated annual recycling effect of about 7,700 tons of waste plastic.
Meanwhile, LG Electronics is practicing environmental protection through environmental-related certifications in South Korea. A total of eight new TV models, including the 2025 LG OLED Evo (model name: OLED83G5), recently received the 'E-Circular Excellent Product' certification from the Korean E-Circular Governance. LG Electronics has received this certification for three consecutive years, recognizing its achievements in product development that considers resource recycling.
