Samsung Electronics announced on the 9th that it has updated its smart home platform "SmartThings" to enhance artificial intelligence (AI) home functions. This update supports the optimization of users' sleep environments through integration with "Samsung Health."
Based on sleep data collected from Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Ring, and other devices, the function receives sleep or wake-up information from Samsung Health and controls surrounding devices such as curtains and TVs accordingly. When users fall asleep, the lights and TV turn off; when they wake up in the morning, the curtains open, and music matching their preferences plays, enabling automation.
With the addition of weekly, monthly, and annual recurring execution settings beyond specific times, days, and weather, the range of routine utilization has expanded. This allows for features such as "vacation mode," which automatically adjusts blinds and lights considering changed waking times during breaks, and "seasonal customized management" in line with seasonal changes.
A "broadcasting" feature for family communication has also been introduced. This function plays voice messages through speakers or soundbars linked to SmartThings. Additionally, updates include the expansion of devices compatible with the "Calm onboarding" feature, which automatically links product information, and support for the Matter 1.4 standard, enhancing compatibility among Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
A beta service for the "natural language-based routine creation feature" has started for certain Galaxy models in South Korea and the United States. Currently, only Korean and English are supported, and plans are in place to expand supported languages, countries, and targeted models in the future.
Jung Jae-yeon, vice president and head of the SmartThings team, said, "This SmartThings update aims to provide a more intuitive and personalized experience," adding, "We will continue to strive to deliver meaningful innovations tailored to each user through SmartThings."
