The number of users of the generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot "Grok," created by Elon Musk, is sharply increasing, competing with China's DeepSeek for the position of the second most visited chatbot website.
According to traffic statistics site SimilarWeb on the 3rd, the average daily web visitors for Grok, the chatbot developed by Musk's AI corporation xAI, reached 16.5 million globally in March. This figure is identical to that of DeepSeek's chatbot during the same period.
David Kaa of SimilarWeb analyzed, "Compared to ChatGPT, which surpassed 500 million active users weekly, this figure is still modest, but xAI and DeepSeek are engaged in fierce competition for the second place." Notably, while DeepSeek's daily visitors declined by 25% compared to February, Grok showed significant growth.
Grok's rapid growth has been particularly evident since the release of its latest version, "Grok 3," in February. Kaa noted, "The fastest growing AI platform currently is Grok, with web traffic increasing by about 800% in a month." Elon Musk previously introduced Grok 3 as "the smartest chatbot in the world."
xAI is also promoting Grok as a separate mobile app and focusing on expanding its user base by opening features to free users. According to app data analytics firm Sensor Tower, global mobile app downloads surged more than tenfold immediately after the launch of Grok 3 on February 24, with daily active users in the U.S. and worldwide increasing by 2.6 times and 5 times, respectively.
Meanwhile, Google’s "Gemini" and Microsoft’s "Copilot" also saw average daily visitors increase by 7.4% and 2.1% respectively in March, reaching 10.9 million and 2.4 million, reflecting a growing trend in the number of users across the chatbot market.
