Samsung Electronics announced on the 1st that it unveiled the new cinema LED screen 'Onyx' at the world's largest film industry expo, 'CinemaCon 2025,' being held in Las Vegas, USA.
Onyx is a cinema LED screen designed specifically for theaters, which Samsung Electronics first introduced in 2017, and it became the world's first to receive certification for digital cinema standard specifications from the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) as a movie screen, not as a projector.
This new product features a 4K resolution (4,096 x 2,160), a maximum 4K 120Hz frame rate, accurate colors that meet 100% of DCI-P3, the standard color gamut of DCI, overwhelming contrast ratio, and deep black levels.
The sizes consist of a total of four standard sizes based on horizontal length: 5 meters (pixel pitch 1.25 mm), 10 meters (2.5 mm), 14 meters (3.3 mm), and 20 meters (5.0 mm).
In addition to the standard sizes, there is a scaling option that allows for installation in various sizes according to the auditorium size.
With scaling, the screen size can be maximized while maintaining the standard aspect ratio of regular films.
It also supports high dynamic range (HDR) technology, offering a brightness of up to 300 nits (1 nit equals the brightness of one candle), which is about six times improved compared to existing projector types.
Onyx is compatible with a variety of media servers such as Dolby, GDC IMB, and it is also compatible with various cinema audio systems including Harman's 'JBL Surround Technology,' Dolby Atmos, Meyer Sound, and QSC.
Samsung Electronics installed a total of six Onyx screens at the 'Pathé Palace,' a 150-year-old opera theater in Paris, France, renovated into a cinema last October. It also received an award in the institutional sector of technology commercialization at the commercial display exhibition 'ISE' held last month.
It has maintained continuous partnerships with global leading film production studios, including Pixar Animation Studios. Samsung Electronics provides the first 10-year long-term quality assurance program in the cinema LED industry.
Jung Hoon, vice president of Samsung Electronics' video display business division, noted, 'Since Samsung Electronics first introduced the cinema LED screen in the world, the cinema industry has been moving toward a new paradigm that goes beyond traditional methods,' and added, 'Onyx will set a new standard for cinema screens aimed at delivering an unparalleled immersive experience that can only be experienced in theaters.'
