The world's largest foundry (semiconductor contract manufacturing) corporation, Taiwan's TSMC, plans to begin mass production at its Kaohsiung 2 NANO meter factory in the second half of this year.

On the 1st, TSMC Vice President and Co-Chief Operating Officer (COO) Chen Yingfei noted this during the roof-raising ceremony at the 22 Fabs (semiconductor production facility) P2 factory held the previous day at the Nanzih Science Park in southern Kaohsiung.

Chen explained that the 22 Fab will be situated on a 79-hectare (790,000㎡) site, exceeding the size of 46 football fields, with a total investment amounting to 1.5 trillion Taiwanese dollars (approximately 66.6 trillion won).

Chen expects that the first factory (P1) of the 22 Fab could produce products worth up to $250 billion (approximately 3,684 trillion won) within five years.

Taiwanese media reported that "TSMC's pursuit of simultaneous production of 2 NANO products at both the southern Kaohsiung Science Park and the northern Hsinchu Science Park shows that client demand has exceeded TSMC's expectations."

TSMC's 2 NANO process technology is the first to adopt a gate-all-around (GAA) structure, which reportedly increases manufacturing speed by 15% at the same power and reduces power consumption by 30% at the same speed compared to the N3E process.
