Satya Nadella, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Microsoft (MS), expressed his intention to independently develop an artificial intelligence (AI) model to be integrated into business software, according to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) on the 28th.

Nadella said in an interview with Nikkei the previous day regarding the development of the independent AI model, "We will build an independent capability that complements our collaboration with OpenAI." He indicated that Microsoft could provide the independent AI model through its business software if he determines that it can provide added value to customers.

Since 2019, Microsoft has collaborated with OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, and has been providing features like document generation and summarization using ChatGPT under the name "Copilot" in software such as Excel for corporations and consumers.

Nikkei predicted that Microsoft has created simple AI models independently so far, but in the future, it is expected to also produce highly efficient AI models independently.

Microsoft strengthened its AI development system last year by hiring executives from prominent AI startups in the United States. Nadella noted that investment in generative AI will depend on demand, stating, "Ultimately, the direction AI takes will be determined by the growth rate of the world's gross domestic product (GDP)."

Regarding Microsoft's future, which will mark its 50th anniversary on the 4th of next month, he explained, "I have aimed to create technology that empowers many people to generate their own technology," adding, "I wish to remain such a corporation for the next 50 years as well."

Nadella said regarding Microsoft's investment in Japan, "We will collaborate with Japanese corporations to develop cutting-edge technology."

Microsoft established its first research base in Japan last year to support the introduction and application of AI in fields such as robotics and automobiles.
