Anthropic, a U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) company considered a rival to OpenAI, held its first official event in South Korea, expressing its commitment to expanding its business in the country.

On the afternoon of the 19th, Anthropic hosted the 'Korea Builder Summit' at Signiel in Jamsil, Songpa-gu, Seoul, in collaboration with the domestic AI startup Coxwave. About 200 attendees included representatives from major corporations, chief technology officers, AI developers, and technology leaders.

Anthropic is an AI company established in 2021. Founded by experts from OpenAI, it aims to develop safe and responsible AI. The 'Claude' series competes with ChatGPT in the generative AI field and has drawn attention. Claude is the world's first integrated model for reasoning and non-reasoning, and the latest model, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, was recently released. The hybrid reasoning feature equipped in Claude 3.7 Sonnet supports both extended thought-based responses and immediate responses.

On that day, Mike Krieger, co-founder of Instagram and chief product officer (CPO) of Anthropic, along with Kate E. Jensen, head of revenue, and other key members of Anthropic took to the stage.

During a discussion with CPO Krieger, questions arose about the differences between so-called "ChatGPT-type humans" (ChatGPT users) and "Claude-type humans" (Claude users). Krieger noted, "That's an interesting question," adding, "The advantage of Claude is that it empathizes and understands better. Claude-type humans are 'people who empathize well.'"

Krieger also said, "Having a passion for safety means being cautious, but it also means finding balance." He explained that during the development of Claude 3.7, efforts were made to reduce the number of times the system rejects users' tasks, noting, "We were able to reduce rejection cases by 50% when transitioning from 3.5 to 3.7."

Anthropic expressed a strong commitment to entering the South Korean market that day. Jensen identified South Korea as "a place where the fastest-growing startups in the world are gathered." Jensen stated, "This year will be the first year we will begin significant investment in the Asia-Pacific region," adding, "I look forward to meeting again in South Korea and hope to share good news soon."

Krieger commented, "(Among existing clients) there are many B2B companies, but during this visit to Korea, I heard that B2C companies also use Claude well. I am particularly pleased to receive feedback that it understands Korean well." He continued, "It seems that the characteristic of empathy applies to multiple languages." He also mentioned, "I heard that Haiku struggles with formal language, but if you provide feedback, I will work on it." Haiku is a sub-model of Claude Sonnet.

Anthropic is collaborating with domestic corporations such as Naver, Coxwave, Liner, and wrtn. During the discussion, Chief Technology Officer Kang Ji-soo of Cleon noted, "Claude enables natural conversations. Other large language models may appear somewhat robotic, but Claude feels more natural. We also need to consider not only quality but also expense. Cost efficiency and high quality are Claude's advantages."

Kim Joo-won, CEO of Coxwave, said, "By jointly hosting this summit with Anthropic, we have set an important milestone for the Korean AI ecosystem," emphasizing, "Coxwave will continue to support corporations in building safe and reliable AI solutions as a leading company in AI safety."
