On the 4th, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) announced that it will conduct a survey on the collection and use of personal information by robot vacuum cleaners.
The PIPC explained, "Recently, the sales of robot vacuum cleaners, which are home appliances utilizing Internet of Things (IoT) technology, have surged, and it plans to conduct a preliminary investigation into the status of personal information collection and use by robot vacuum cleaners that handle video and audio information of data subjects."
The PIPC plans to examine whether the process of handling personal information complies with the Personal Information Protection Act, focusing on major brands of robot vacuum cleaners launched in the country, including domestic products such as Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, as well as foreign products from Roborock, Ecovacs, and Xiaomi.
The PIPC noted, "Through this preliminary investigation, we will ensure that data subjects can use robot vacuum cleaner products with peace of mind."
