LG Uplus announced on the 20th that it will participate in the 'Red Team Challenge' during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 to verify the reliability of its self-developed artificial intelligence (AI) model, 'ixi-GEN.'

The 'Red Team Challenge' is a competition to verify the safety and reliability of AI models developed by telecom companies worldwide. It will be hosted by the GSM Association (GSMA) and is set to take place on the 5th of next month in Barcelona, Spain, where MWC25 is being held. The event will involve 80 to 100 evaluators acting as hackers to identify biases, hallucinations, and other vulnerabilities in AI models specialized for telecommunications.

Corporations that are confident in their self-developed AI models mainly participate in the Red Team Challenge. Since vulnerabilities in AI can be revealed through the challenge, it is common for only AI models that have secured safety and reliability to participate. The vulnerabilities identified by the evaluators are scored by a judging panel. The number of participating companies, final scores, and rankings are not disclosed externally.

LG Uplus will participate in the challenge through its self-developed small language model (sLLM), ixi-GEN powered by EXAONE, based on LG AI Research's EXAONE. The telecommunications-specialized AI model 'ixi-GEN,' introduced by LG Uplus last year, is an AI model trained on telecommunications and platform data, based on the large language model (LLM) 'EXAONE' developed by LG AI Research. LG Uplus is applying ixi-GEN in various AI services, including network (NW) operations agents, chat agents, and mobile store advisors.

Through this challenge participation, LG Uplus aims to introduce the performance and safety of its self-developed ixi-GEN to the global market and intends to enhance the AI model by addressing vulnerabilities discovered.

The excellent AI technology of LG Uplus can also be confirmed through a report published by GSMA. The report, titled 'Telco AI: State of the Market,' which GSMA plans to issue ahead of MWC25, will include introductions to LG Uplus's AI solutions, 'IXIO' and the ixi-GEN-based 'Operations Agent.' The report is expected to cover key features of 'IXIO,' such as AI call response, real-time chatting, and voice phishing detection, as well as network operations automation and deep learning-based maintenance of the 'Operations Agent.'

Lee Hye-jin, head of technology strategy at LG Uplus, noted, 'We decided to participate in the Red Team Challenge, which involves global telecom operators, so that customers can use AI services with greater assurance and trust.' She added, 'Going forward, we will continue to enhance ixi-GEN in collaboration with LG AI Research to achieve global-level security features.'
