Until early last year, Samsung Electronics held a dominant 1st place in the Southeast Asian market, but its smartphone market share has dropped to 4th place, ceding all top spots to Chinese companies.
Market research firm Canalys announced on the 11th that based on shipment volume in the fourth quarter last year, Transion secured 1st place in the Southeast Asian smartphone market share with 17%, followed by Oppo and Xiaomi with 16% each. Samsung Electronics ranked 4th with a market share of 15%, while also being pursued by another Chinese company, Vivo, with 14%. Apple and Realme each had a market share of 9%.
Transion, which ranked 1st, is a leading low-cost smartphone manufacturer from China that sells smartphones priced between 100,000 and 200,000 won in the African and South Asian markets.
Samsung Electronics had a market share exceeding 25%, maintaining a dominant 1st place in the Southeast Asian market in the first quarter of 2022, while Transion was in 5th place with less than 10%. However, in the fourth quarter of last year, Transion rose to 1st place for the first time. Transion's ascent to 1st place was attributed to strong product launches in Indonesia and the Philippines. Last year's total smartphone shipments in Southeast Asia recorded 96.7 million units, an 11% increase compared to the previous year, with Oppo ranking first for the first time.
Oppo recorded a market share of 18% with 16.9 million units shipped, while Samsung Electronics secured the 2nd place with 16.6 million units shipped, reflecting a market share of 17%. Transion and Xiaomi both achieved a market share of 16%, tying for 3rd place.
